Verstappen on Rivalries - No One Puts Me Through Hell

Verstappen Mirrors Schumacher’s Relentless Will to Win

09/11/2024

Max Verstappen channels Schumacher’s legendary drive as he dominates another demanding season, unwavering in his pursuit of greatness.

Max Verstappen believes his uncompromising drive to leave “nothing on the table” in pursuit of victory aligns him with legends like Michael Schumacher. As he nears clinching his fourth consecutive Formula 1 title, Verstappen has often had to push himself to the very limit, particularly in challenging races such as the Brazilian Grand Prix. This season’s journey has been notably tougher than previous ones, demanding relentless focus and resilience from the Dutch driver.

However, Verstappen’s approach has not been without controversy. His aggressive maneuvers, especially in head-to-head battles with his closest competitor, Lando Norris, have drawn criticism. Incidents like his recent clash in Mexico have sparked debate, with some questioning the toll of his high-stakes approach.

Yet Verstappen remains unfazed by public opinion. “I don’t care for compliments. I want to win, and I always give everything to make it happen,” he states unapologetically. “That’s where I feel a connection to drivers like Michael. He never held back in his pursuit of success, both in the car with his driving style and outside it, working tirelessly on the car’s development. There’s no place for fear, but common sense is essential.”

Despite his fierce rivalry with Norris, Verstappen is quick to dismiss the notion that any one driver stands as his “most formidable adversary.”

“Lando is a great driver, but there isn’t a single rival who puts me through hell. The teams are too close in performance for it to always be a one-on-one battle,” he explains. “Every weekend is unique; some cars are suited to certain tracks, and the same goes for drivers.”

For Verstappen, it is a matter of maintaining his edge—undaunted, determined, and in the company of the greats.
