Verstappen may follow Newey to Aston Martin F1

Marko hints Verstappen could join Aston Martin

13/09/2024

Helmut Marko suggests Max Verstappen might consider moving to Aston Martin F1, potentially following Adrian Newey. “Max drives where he can win,” Marko says, fueling speculation about the champion’s future.

Dr. Helmut Marko, Red Bull advisor, has added fuel to the fire surrounding early rumors that Max Verstappen could follow Adrian Newey to Aston Martin F1.

The triple world champion has never hidden his admiration for Newey and even tried to dissuade him from leaving Red Bull.

As for whether Verstappen could now follow, team director Mike Krack refused to rule it out yesterday, just like Verstappen who said: “It may be something to consider in the future.”

Marko has not dismissed this possibility, despite the fact that Verstappen has a contract with Red Bull until the end of 2028.

“Max drives where he can win. Aston Martin has the most modern factory, the wind tunnel will be operational next year, and Honda engines will be added. Everything fits.”

“And if you look at history, it’s clear: everywhere Newey has gone, there has been an upward trend. I don’t see why it should be different at Aston Martin.”

Marko naturally hopes that Verstappen will stay, even if he acknowledges that Red Bull must stop its current decline and prove to the Dutch driver that the team based in Milton Keynes is the place to be from 2026.

“He knows he can also win titles with us, if we manage to win this world championship now. That’s also why it’s an absolute necessity.”

Marko warned Verstappen that it will take time for Newey and there’s no guarantee he will be 100% operational for the 2026 project.

“Adrian Newey won’t be able to start before March 1, 2025, which is already relatively late. The entire Aston Martin team will certainly have to get used to him first, and the opposite is also true.”
