Max Verstappen’s unflappable nature and elite skill keep Red Bull at the forefront of F1 racing.
Damon Hill is convinced that this year, Red Bull owes its salvation to Max Verstappen. The 1996 F1 World Champion is impressed by how the Dutchman manages to remain calm under all circumstances to achieve the best possible results.
“It must be said that there have been two good races this year where Red Bull’s victory is due to Max’s brilliance and his ability to stay calm under pressure,” the Briton concedes. “I was very impressed by how he did not panic when he had a poor start to the weekend [in Canada].”
“He settled in, seemed to bide his time. Even if he complains about issues with the car, that he couldn’t hit the kerbs, he still sounds relaxed on the radio, the only time he doesn’t appear relaxed is when he’s upset by something or someone and vents his anger.”
“Otherwise, he is capable of driving at the pinnacle of Formula 1 while thinking clearly, devising strategies, and seizing the opportunities that come his way. He had a chance and he stuck with it. He didn’t drop the ball or anything of that sort, and you have to say he is simply very, very good.”
Aware of the understatement in his final remark, Hill then joked: “I’m afraid I’m stating the obvious. I don’t get points for that.”
