Max Verstappen quickly adapted to his state-of-the-art simulator, installed in his new motorhome, which he will take to all European Grands Prix. The triple world champion familiarized himself with the setup in just “two laps” during the Formula 1 race weekend at Imola, combined with five hours of driving in the virtual Nürburgring 24 Hours event on the iRacing platform.
“My motorhome is finally ready this year, so I put my simulator in it. It was done at the last minute, right at Imola. It’s the same simulator I have at home, so it wasn’t an issue to dive straight into the race,” Verstappen said.
Team Redline went to great lengths to prepare Verstappen for Imola. “We had to build a simulator that fits his motorhome,” confirmed Atze Kerkhof, founder of Team Redline. “We set everything up, and he got accustomed in two laps.”
“We wanted to bring it in a trailer from a Formula 2 team with MP Motorsport, but it was too large to fit everything. They helped us immensely by transporting it to Imola with a guy who was delivering flowers for business,” Kerkhof added.
Redline engineer Jack Cubitt “was there to set everything up and integrate it into his motorhome.” However, they faced a power outage. “A driver short-circuited his coffee machine in the motorhome area, so we had to arrange a high-power inverter,” Kerkhof explained.
“Jack searched all over Imola and even Milan for one, but eventually found out that Max was driving for a team that had it in stock. In the end, he simply asked Red Bull,” Kerkhof added.
Verstappen revealed his ambition to participate in real endurance races like the 24 Hours of Le Mans. “I hope it will be possible in five or six years. With more and more F1 races, it’s almost impossible to do it now. If I do it, I want to be well-prepared and competitive. You need proper testing and preparation with the right team, which you can’t do during an F1 season at the moment.”
Verstappen is expected to continue using his simulator for fun during upcoming Grands Prix and will also participate in the virtual 24 Hours of Spa during the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend in July.
