Max Verstappen remains undecided on attending the FIA awards, citing safety concerns regarding Rwanda’s Marburg virus outbreak.
Max Verstappen has yet to fully commit to attending the FIA awards ceremony in December, set to take place in Kigali, Rwanda.
Rwanda is not only one of the leading contenders for a future African Grand Prix but has also been chosen to host the FIA’s end-of-season prize-giving ceremony, a mandatory event for top-level drivers like the three-time world champion.
Relations between Verstappen and FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem are currently strained, following the Dutchman’s penalty in Singapore for using the word “fuck” during an FIA press conference.
The pair have not yet cleared the air, although a few words were exchanged after the race in parc fermé.
“I didn’t say much more than ‘hello,’” Verstappen revealed. “I didn’t have much to say.”
However, this tension is not the reason why Verstappen has not fully committed to travelling to Rwanda in December to collect his World Champion trophy… or Vice-Champion, should Norris beat him.
“We just need to wait and see if everything is fine over there,” Verstappen confirmed, referring to the outbreak of the deadly Marburg virus in Rwanda.
“If there’s no danger, it won’t be a problem.”
He admitted, however, that the risk of illness is not his only concern.
“The people there are paying to host it. For me, it’s not so much about the location, but the fact that everyone has to come at their own expense.”
“Look, for me, it’s not an issue, of course, but karting drivers and those in other categories may not have that kind of money and have to cover all the costs themselves.”
“If they want to hold the event in Timbuktu, I think that’s fine, but it would be good if we could look into covering the expenses. The drivers are invited, of course, but they’re also obliged to attend. And then you have to pay for it yourself?”
“I think that’s a bit unfair.”
