Max Verstappen discusses teaming up with Fernando Alonso in F1 and Le Mans, emphasizing the strategic importance of lightweight teammates.
Max Verstappen was asked about his future and whether he could see himself teaming up with Fernando Alonso… in Formula 1.
The two drivers have more or less acknowledged they could form a strong duo, with a third driver to be found for Le Mans or the WEC.
However, rumors suggest Aston Martin F1 has made an offer to secure the Dutchman, reportedly worth €1 billion, covering salary, bonuses, and equity in the team.
“In the future, it’s very hard to say what will happen,” Verstappen responded without denying the speculation.
Regarding Le Mans, there’s no ambiguity: “We’re thinking about it, and we know we want to do it. My father is still very capable, but he doesn’t want to race anymore.”
“We’ll see what happens. A lot of things can change. There are many great drivers to choose from. I have many friends who race too, so it’ll be hard to decide.”
Has he discussed it with Alonso recently?
“I spoke to Fernando about it. He told me he would only do it again with me. The only issue is that for Le Mans, there’s no minimum driver weight. I’m a fairly heavy driver, so I’d need lighter teammates to compensate. Fernando is quite light, so that would be a good fit. But we’d still need to find another one, so I have to look into it.”
Last year, Verstappen mentioned a potential candidate: fellow Dutchman and Formula E champion Nyck de Vries, who has raced at the Circuit de la Sarthe three times.
“A driver I would absolutely want on the team is Nyck de Vries. He’s fast and very light. Right now, with these rules, being fast and light for Le Mans is perfect.”
Verstappen was also asked more broadly about Spanish drivers, including Alonso and Carlos Sainz.
“I’m very happy to have raced with or against Fernando and Carlos. Their impact on F1 in Spain has been incredible.”
“Of course, with Fernando winning championships, I think he’s already made a huge effort, and naturally, that continues with Carlos. It’s fantastic, of course.”
“In Spain, motorsport and racing, in general, are very important. They’re very passionate.”
“I always enjoy coming to Spain. For me, it’s a country filled with great memories, and I really appreciate it.”
“Seeing Fernando and Carlos succeed is fantastic. I think it also inspires many young people who want to achieve the same.”
