Helmut Marko reveals that his close relationship with Max Verstappen is what drives him to remain committed to Formula 1.
Helmut Marko has reflected on the early part of the year when he faced the threat of suspension from Red Bull, as the team feared he might disclose confidential information to the media.
“It certainly wasn’t a very pleasant period, with many rumours circulating,” Marko recalls. “Oliver Mintzlaff came to Saudi Arabia, where we had a long and productive conversation. Another Red Bull executive, Franz Watzlawick, was also present.”
“We had a good discussion with him. And yes, the suspension was one of many issues involved in the transition to new leadership after Dietrich Mateschitz’s passing, with the Thai side of the business now exerting significantly more influence.”
However, Marko reveals that his main motivation to continue his role is largely due to Max Verstappen and his circle, in addition to his passion for Formula 1: “I’m independent. I don’t need this job. My motivation comes from my passion, my enthusiasm for the sport.”
“And of course, the strong bond with Max Verstappen and the Verstappen family in general. It was clear to me that if I stayed, I wouldn’t be restricted or limited in any way, ensuring I can always do what’s best for Max.”
