Carlos Sainz praises McLaren’s flawless upgrades while Verstappen admits their undeniable strength in the competition.
Carlos Sainz says his former team McLaren has outperformed its rivals because the updates they have made to their car always work.
McLaren, which claimed a resounding victory at Zandvoort last weekend, “is clearly the team to beat” at the moment, according to him.
“They have demonstrated in recent races that they have the fastest car on the track and the rest of us are trying to implement all these improvements which sometimes work, sometimes don’t. The only ones who know exactly how to implement an upgrade and make it work are McLaren for now.”
“The rest of us are trying to find our way. We’re going to try to do that this weekend and I hope it can give us a bit more performance.”
Ferrari had a poor qualifying last weekend, but its cars were much more competitive in race configuration. The team has brought new parts for its home race this weekend, but Sainz is cautious about its prospects.
“I think we need to wait to see the new track, the new tarmac, the updates. We’ll see where we stand after this Friday and then whether we’re fighting for pole position or the win, or if we’re fighting for the podium, the top 5, or the top 8. Only time will tell.”
Meanwhile, Max Verstappen saw his championship lead cut to 70 points over Lando Norris last weekend. Is he also impressed by the quality of McLaren’s upgrades?
“They are strong, that’s undeniable, but we need to focus on ourselves.”
“For now, it’s just important that we try to fix some balance issues we have and that’s what we’ll try to do this weekend.”
“We have some ideas, which we’re going to try. The track is also new with the asphalt and the curbs and everything, so we need to find out how the car reacts to that.”
