Max Verstappen narrowly defeated Sergio Pérez to claim pole at the Japanese Grand Prix, aiming for a third straight Suzuka win.

Max Verstappen overcame Sergio Pérez to secure pole position at the Japanese Grand Prix. The three-time World Champion will thus start from the front, aiming for a third consecutive victory at Suzuka.

“It was really close at the end. The track is sensitive with the tires, the asphalt is very aggressive, and you really want to push the limit, but it doesn’t always work. But the most important thing is to be on pole,” Verstappen stated.

“You want every lap to be perfect, but on such a circuit, it’s not always the case. But it was a good day overall, I have a good starting position tomorrow, and that’s what matters. It’s great for the team to be first and second, and we hope to continue this tomorrow.”

Pérez Seconds Behind Verstappen in Tight Suzuka Qualifying

Pérez, on his part, qualified second, just 66 milliseconds behind his teammate. The Mexican is pleased to be so close, even though he fell just short of the pole position.

“It was tight today with Max, it was tricky, but I managed a good lap. It was easy to lose a few tenths at the last chicane, I managed to put everything together today but it wasn’t enough,” Pérez said.

“It’s been very close all weekend, including in qualifying. When the margins are so small, the slightest thing can make a difference. I think we’re in a good position for tomorrow. Our pace on the long runs wasn’t so good today, but we’ll try to be stronger tomorrow.”
