Verstappen Clause Dropped Marko’s Vision for Red Bull’s Future

Marko Addresses Verstappen Clause Removal: Loyalty and Legacy

03/01/2025

Dr. Helmut Marko explains the decision to remove Verstappen’s contract clause, emphasizing loyalty and long-term success at Red Bull Racing.

During the 2024 season, Red Bull Racing faced significant backstage turbulence. Amid the Christian Horner scandal, it was revealed that Max Verstappen could leave the team if Dr. Helmut Marko were dismissed.

Peace returned during the summer break following constructive discussions among all parties. However, Marko had to ensure the removal of the clause linking Max’s future to his own.

Why did the Austrian make this move? Was he forced into it?

According to Marko, “That’s absolutely not the case. The goal is to lay the groundwork for a successful business in the near future.”

“I’ve known the Verstappens for quite some time now. And the Verstappens are unique, that’s clear.”

“One thing is certain: they are loyal. You can rely on them. For me, of course, Max’s support was very kind. He is one of the greatest athletes in the world, earns a lot of money, but above all, he remains true to his principles. That hasn’t changed since he was fourteen.”

While Marko insists he is fit enough to continue attending races and supporting the team, he acknowledges it would be irresponsible to plan a long-term future reliant on him.

“Of course, I want to continue. What’s the secret? Passion.”

“I’ve never had major health problems, I drink a bit less than before, and I get up every day at five or six o’clock. I bring books with me and always eat something healthy. That way, I can keep going.”
