Max Verstappen hints he could extend his F1 career—if the sport brings back the iconic V10 engines, which he says are far superior.
Max Verstappen has hinted that a return to the legendary V10 engines could be the key factor in extending his Formula 1 career.
Currently contracted with Red Bull until the end of 2028, the Dutchman’s long-term future remains uncertain. Will he see out his deal? Could he move to another team? Or will he walk away from F1 entirely? Speculation is running wild.
At this stage, Verstappen staying beyond 2028 seems unlikely. He has often expressed interest in exploring other motorsport disciplines, and his frustration with F1’s growing race calendar and increasingly restrictive regulations is no secret. With 24 races and six sprint weekends now on the schedule, the intense workload is becoming a real concern for him.
A V10 Comeback?
F1’s current regulations are set for a major overhaul in 2026, but fresh reports suggest that negotiations are underway to either cancel or shorten that rule change—potentially paving the way for a return to naturally aspirated V10 engines.
When asked about the idea, Verstappen’s response in China this morning was immediate and enthusiastic.
“I’m not the one making the rules, but for the pure emotion of racing, a V10 is miles ahead of what we have today,” he said.
“As a kid, I remember walking around the track, hearing those engines roar—it gave you chills. Even if the cars were slower, the sound, the feeling… it was just something else.”
And would a return to V10s be enough to keep him in Formula 1 longer? His answer was telling.
“Maybe… Yes! It’s definitely more exciting than what we have now.”
