Verstappen reveals his distress following a clash with Norris, yet their rapport remains strong, showing professional composure.
Max Verstappen opened up at Silverstone about the recent days and the aftermath of his collision with Lando Norris in Austria.
The McLaren F1 driver has already stated that he doesn’t expect an apology from him and that he had discussions with the Red Bull driver twice—Monday and yesterday—about it (read here).
“That’s why I already said after the race that there was no reason to discuss it now. Emotions are running high, and that kind of thing,” Verstappen said today.
“I woke up quite early Monday morning because I wanted to talk to Lando but he had already sent me a message, early that morning. I think the next day, your emotions are a bit calmer.”
“I really respected that. And we are great friends. He’s a very nice guy, honestly. And of course, I was also very upset and disappointed that we touched because naturally, of course, on the track, you fight hard, but as a friend too, you’re very disappointed that it happened.”
“But I also think quite quickly, when we were talking, we shared the same opinion that we need to fight hard because that’s what we love to do and that’s what we’ve always done. Not just in F1, even when we used to race together online and that kind of thing, that’s what we really liked about each other: fighting hard, and that’s what we’ll continue to do.”
The GPDA wants to look into the collision and review the rules of engagement. Verstappen dismisses it!
“For me, the most important thing was to talk with Lando and we did that from Monday. He was upset, I was upset that—as friends—we found ourselves fighting for the lead. But looking back, we had a great battle. Unfortunately, it was just a silly little contact that caused a puncture and ruined the race. It was unfortunate but we’ve settled it between us. No need for the opinions of the other 18!”
Will these remarks help calm the fans? Several boos have already been heard on the track today…
“The only thing that matters in my life is that I get along well with Lando. I don’t care about the rest.”
