Leclerc hails Vasseur’s emotional consistency, calling it essential for managing the intense passion within the Ferrari Formula 1 team.
What does it take to manage a team as lively and passion-driven as Ferrari?
A man capable of withstanding it. That’s how Charles Leclerc sees Fredéric Vasseur as well-suited for the role. According to him, Vasseur’s “emotionally flat” demeanor has been a key asset in managing Ferrari over the past two years, enabling the team to return to a level where they can contend for world titles.
“Where Fred is extremely good is in taking a step back, no matter the situation we’re in,” Leclerc told The New York Times.
“It’s very difficult because this is a sport, and we all care deeply about what we do. We all want to perform well, and we are affected when things go right or wrong.”
“But Fred is very emotionally flat, and that helps a lot with a team like Ferrari because the team is completely the opposite, mainly due to the sheer amount of passion within the team. Emotions run high in both directions, whether things are going well or badly.”
“Fred is the kind of guy who, even during a weekend where emotions can be extremely high or low, immediately manages to take a step back.”
“Twenty minutes after a race, we all sit down together, and he already has a solid analysis, setting emotions aside. That’s an incredible quality for leading Ferrari.”
Leclerc admits he has always known Vasseur to be like this, whether in F1 at Alfa Romeo in 2018 or even earlier, in F2 with ART Grand Prix.
“I feel like he’s always had that in him. He’s always been consistent with his emotions.”
“Every time I go to Fred, I know what to expect. It’s not like there’s ever a change in mood or anything like that.”
