Leclerc’s controlled victory in Monaco earns high praise from Ferrari’s Vasseur, marking a significant achievement.
Frederic Vasseur, the director of Scuderia Ferrari, expressed his pleasure in seeing Charles Leclerc finally secure a victory at home. The Frenchman noted the significance for Leclerc to achieve this success in front of his home crowd, having previously missed out for various reasons.
“It’s an incredible feeling, it was important for the team and for Charles. You know the situation, he has been unlucky or otherwise multiple times in Monaco, and it was a crucial step for him to tick this box. Now that it’s done, let’s focus on the next… but first, let’s focus on celebrating tonight!” Vasseur stated.
When asked about Leclerc’s management of the weekend, Vasseur praised the driver for his calm demeanor and masterful control of the race. He also commended Carlos Sainz for his efforts in assisting Leclerc and securing the final podium position.
“Honestly, I felt he was stressed last year in Monaco, and that wasn’t the case this year. From the first lap, he was flying, and he maintained a tremendous pace throughout all the sessions. Even in challenging moments, like in Q1 when we caught a plastic bag on the wing, he remained calm, and everything was under control from start to finish. It was a perfect weekend.”
“It was also true for Carlos because we asked him to do a tough job staying within 5 seconds of Piastri while keeping Russell a specific number of seconds behind. He executed the job perfectly, and it’s a significant success for him.”
In two weeks, Formula 1 heads to Canada, on another circuit where Red Bull might struggle with handling their RB20, especially due to the curbs. Vasseur doesn’t want to dwell on it as such and reminds that the tight gaps mean that nothing is certain.
“I would say that regardless of the next circuit, winning in Monaco boosts everyone’s confidence. But it’s true that there are similarities, even though it’s faster with low downforce. But we are moving in the right direction, the top three are separated by a tenth in each qualifying, and we cannot assume anything is set, as we could be sixth or seventh in the next one.”
