Ferrari’s Vasseur reveals how Hamilton’s vast experience and Leclerc’s familiarity create a dynamic, competitive duo driving the team towards success.
Ferrari’s team principal, Fred Vasseur, has had a few weeks to work with his new driver lineup—Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton—having experienced four Grand Prix races, with the fifth one currently underway.
What has he learned about their approach? Has Leclerc’s attitude changed with Hamilton’s arrival? Are their approaches similar? Vasseur gives a clear and direct response!
“Similar? You never have two drivers with the same approach. They are competitors. They are both champions. They each have their own DNA, their own method, and they both want to be the best. What’s positive for us is that they push each other, and we need to make the most of that. But their approach is that of true competitors.”
Has Hamilton brought a fresh perspective to Ferrari?
“He comes with his own wealth of experience—20 years in F1, with stints at various teams, almost ten years at McLaren, and 12 years at Mercedes. It’s always valuable to have someone like that joining the team, someone with this level of experience and vision to help us move forward. Right now, there are four teams fighting for the win—maybe five or six tomorrow—but four teams, each with different structures, different teams, and different management. And yet, we’re all capable of having four cars within a tenth of a second. That means the question isn’t about who’s right or wrong. It’s about understanding what others are doing and learning from it. That’s where we are today.”
Is it fair to say that, since Charles has been with the team longer, Lewis has learned more from him at the start of this season?
“I’ve managed quite a few drivers in my career, and collaboration is always a positive experience. They always learn from each other, both ways. Of course, Charles is more familiar with the team—that’s no secret, and it’s obvious. But Lewis, with his own experience, adds considerable value for us and for Charles. He’s helping Charles too. It’s mutual, and that’s very positive for us.”
