The Scuderia “missed victory” with a disappointing qualifying.
Fred Vasseur is pleased that Charles Leclerc secured a podium at Imola, but the Ferrari team principal can’t help but regret yesterday’s missed qualifying opportunity. However, he is very happy to see that in race pace, three teams are now very close.
“It’s mixed because I think there was room to do better. I think if we had put everything together in qualifying and started from the front, we would have won. It’s frustrating, but the overall picture is rather good,” Vasseur told.
“Today, we got the best result possible because it’s very difficult to overtake here. When we pushed, we managed to close the gap, but we had to be careful with tire overheating and didn’t have enough pace difference to overtake.”
“We are in the group with McLaren and Red Bull; after 63 laps, there are three cars within six seconds, all within a tenth, and that’s encouraging. We’ll reset everything in Monaco, but today there wasn’t much more we could do. If we missed the victory, it was yesterday,” continued the Frenchman, who is pleased with the improvements made.
“We know that in Miami, we were all within a tenth, and this weekend we were all within a tenth, so we all did the same job! But it’s positive because we found the results on track that we were expecting, and it’s encouraging for the future development. We need to focus on the details because that’s what makes the difference.”
Vasseur is convinced that Monaco will bring its share of surprises, and he counts on Leclerc to shine: “Monaco is so unique that what we look for in the car is a bit different. It’s not certain that the hierarchy will be the same in Monaco, and we can count on a superb Charles to give us a lap of the Madonna!”
The Frenchman also had a word for the Italian fans.
“I would like to thank all the tifosi because it was very special to see them under the podium after the race. They brought us a lot of energy this week. Overall, it was a good weekend beyond the on-track performance.”
“We are definitely in the rhythm now, and we can fight for the top spot, even though we still have a small step to make.”
