Valtteri Bottas returns to Mercedes as a reserve driver for 2025, bringing experience and determination to support the team’s goals.
“10 Grand Prix victories. 20 pole positions. 67 podiums. A pivotal role in securing five consecutive Constructors’ World Championships. A storied career. A true icon of the F1 paddock.”
“But what comes next? An age-old question. One humanity has pondered for millennia. Today, the answer.”
So begins Mercedes F1’s announcement confirming Valtteri Bottas’s return as reserve driver for 2025.
“I’m thrilled to finally answer the question I’ve been asking myself over the past month: ‘What’s next?’ Returning home to the Mercedes family as the third driver for 2025 is the next step, and I couldn’t be happier. I want to thank Toto, the team in Brackley, and everyone for welcoming me back with open arms.”
“Despite the challenges of recent years, I know I still have much to offer to F1. Ever since I was five years old growing up in Nastola, Finland, I’ve focused on succeeding in top-level motorsport. I’ve been fortunate to experience many incredible moments during my 12 years of racing in F1 so far. Coming back to the place where so many of those moments were achieved, I’m excited to use all the knowledge I’ve gained to help the team perform and progress toward our goal of fighting for World Championships.”
“Welcome home, Valtteri! It’s fantastic to have you back,” says team principal Toto Wolff.
“His impact and contribution during the five years he was with us previously as a race driver were immense. Beyond winning multiple Grands Prix, he played a crucial role in five of our championship victories. His technical feedback and input were vital in driving our success and pushing the team forward. Moreover, he was also a fantastic colleague and teammate.”
“His dry sense of humor and approachable nature made him a favorite among everyone at Brackley and Brixworth. In his role as a reserve driver, all these qualities will be incredibly valuable in helping us compete for world championships and supporting George and Kimi on track.”
