Valtteri Bottas vents over being stuck behind Alonso’s slow pace, while Zhou labels the Monaco GP as one of Stake F1’s worst performances.
Bottas made a strategic gamble during the race that could have paid off by switching to hard tires early, aiming to catch up with a slow-moving pack. However, with no pit stops from the drivers ahead, the Stake F1 driver couldn’t make progress and ended up at the back of the field.
“We tried to seize an opportunity, but we were unlucky with the compound at the start due to the neutralization; those on softer tires had an advantage. We did what we could, but we were all stuck behind Alonso, and it wasn’t fun because he was slow!” Bottas said.
The Finn regrets a difficult qualifying session and a crucial lack of pace: “Qualifying was tough, we lacked rhythm, and we need to understand why. But Monaco is a unique circuit and not very representative.”
Guanyu Zhou also suffered from a strategy ruined by the red flag and witnessed the massive crash involving Sergio Pérez and the Haas F1 drivers up close. His assessment after the Monaco weekend also centered around the lack of pace.
“It was pretty dangerous, and I’m happy the three are okay. I think we had a good strategy until the red flag. Then we were all in the same boat, unable to overtake, and the tires were dead 15 laps from the end, so I had to make another stop,” Zhou said.
“It’s one of our worst races in terms of lack of pace. Monaco is all about confidence, and I was searching for it all weekend. I didn’t have much. But we have to keep working. It will be different on a more traditional circuit, but we need to find a few tenths because we’re lacking performance.”
