Charles Leclerc finished second in Baku, acknowledging he didn’t defend his position aggressively enough, with tyre degradation proving harder to manage than expected, ultimately allowing Oscar Piastri to take the win.
Charles Leclerc finished second in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. After a pole start and a strong first stint, he was overtaken by Oscar Piastri and failed to reclaim the lead. The Ferrari driver noted that managing tyre degradation, which caught him off guard towards the end of the race, proved challenging.
“When we switched to the hard tyres, we were very quick on mediums, but I hadn’t done any runs with fuel in free practice. We opted for a setup direction that was harder to manage during the race, especially on the hard tyres,” Leclerc stated.
“Towards the end, I thought I was going to hit the wall several times. I’m second, McLaren and Oscar did an incredible job and were better. It’s unfortunate for Carlos in the penultimate lap, I hope everyone is okay, but it wasn’t a great day for the team.”
While he enjoyed driving, he nevertheless regretted not defending more vigorously against the McLaren driver: “It’s enjoyable because there are several opportunities per lap, but McLaren was fast on the straights and I was quicker in the corners.”
“I thought Oscar was going to take me, I wanted to overtake him later but it was more difficult than anticipated, I couldn’t get past him. Honestly, we lost the race because I didn’t defend my position as much as I should have at the end of the straight, we sometimes make mistakes and I’ll do better next time.”
