Yuki Tsunoda’s future in Formula 1 remains uncertain, but Honda suggests a decision will come quickly as 2026 driver lineups take shape.
Tsunoda’s fate will be known “very soon” this season, according to Honda’s Formula 1 chief.
Tsunoda is currently entering his fifth year with Red Bull’s junior F1 team, Racing Bulls, after being overlooked for a promotion to partner Max Verstappen.
Many believe part of Red Bull Racing’s decision stems from the team’s factory relationship with Honda coming to an end this year. The Japanese manufacturer is now developing its all-new 2026 engine exclusively for Aston Martin F1.
“We are aiming for homologation in February 2026,” revealed Honda’s F1 project leader, Tetsushi Kakuda, this week.
“Since we started a bit late, we want to push things until the very last moment. It’s hard to say exactly what percentage of progress we’ve made, but I think we’ve reached an important milestone.”
Some believe it is highly unlikely that Tsunoda will remain within the Red Bull family—soon to be unaffiliated with Honda—beyond 2025, and that Honda will push for the 24-year-old Japanese driver to join Aston Martin.
Aston Martin has downplayed these rumors, insisting that Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll are already under contract for 2026.
“He is in his fifth year in F1 and has a lot of experience, so I hope he can make the best choice,” added Koji Watanabe, president of Honda Racing Corporation, this week when asked about Tsunoda.
“I think this is a very important season, and next year’s seat will likely be decided very soon, so I hope he can seize the timing and opportunity to take the next step. I believe he is capable.”
“But above all, I want them to achieve the best possible results this season, our last with the Red Bull teams.”
