Tsunoda’s Crash Seals Red Bull’s Disappointing Q2 Exit

RB F1 Stumbles in Q2 as Tsunoda Ruins Lawson’s Lap

27/10/2024

RB F1’s hopes faltered in Mexico, with Tsunoda’s crash ending Lawson’s lap and both cars missing out on Q3.

RB F1 emerged as one of the disappointments of the Mexican Grand Prix qualifying, with a double elimination in Q2. Yuki Tsunoda went off track while improving his lap, despite having shown strong pace throughout the three practice sessions.

“I lost the car in the stadium section. I had a big lock-up at the front, something I hadn’t experienced all weekend, so it was a bit strange,” the Japanese driver said after qualifying.

“It’s a shame that we couldn’t fully capitalise on the pace we displayed here. I’m sorry for the team. We will assess the damage and see what’s possible for tomorrow. We’ll work on our strategy to fight back into the points.”

Liam Lawson will join him on the sixth row, expressing his frustration after his lap was compromised by his teammate’s off: “It’s a shame, the team gave us both a very good car this weekend, one that was capable of reaching Q3, but these things happen, and being out late comes with risks.”

“We had a very strong first sector that was improving; had we completed the lap, we might have made it. We’ll have to find a way to get some clean air.”

However, he remains optimistic for the race: “It’s going to be tough, but if we have straight-line speed, we should be able to overtake. Our race pace seems pretty solid, so I’m confident in our ability to move forward and fight for points tomorrow.”
