Yuki Tsunoda will drive Red Bull’s RB19 at Silverstone, aiming to uncover what makes it quicker than today’s RB21.
Yuki Tsunoda is set to spend a full day behind the wheel of Red Bull’s dominant 2023 car, the RB19, during a private test at Silverstone. Before hitting the track, the 24-year-old driver has been working in the Red Bull simulator to prepare — and he’s got a clear mission in mind.
“I’m really looking forward to this,” Tsunoda said. “Especially because the upcoming races are on circuits similar to where the RB19 was extremely strong. If I can get a feel for what made that car so successful — something that seems to be missing in our current RB21 — hopefully I can identify it.”
The RB19 won 21 out of 22 races last season, making it one of the most dominant cars in F1 history. Tsunoda is hoping some of that magic can help him and his team move forward this year.
Having now completed three race weekends in the RB21, Tsunoda feels he’s starting to find his groove:
“I’m getting there. The confidence is building. I’m still learning the steps to consistently get the most out of the car — but we’re making progress.”
He added: “You can’t just jump in, push flat out and expect results. That’s not the right mindset. I’m happy with how things are going so far, and I’ve shown good pace. I just need to keep doing what I’m doing.”
Red Bull team boss Christian Horner praised Tsunoda’s efforts in Jeddah, especially during qualifying. A slight difference could have put him much higher on the grid.
“Yuki was impressive,” Horner said. “His Q2 lap of 1:27.990 — if he’d matched that in Q3, he would have started P6. In Q3, he did a 1:28.204, just 0.040s off Sainz and 0.003s behind Hamilton.”
Tsunoda’s race ended early after a close call with Pierre Gasly. But both drivers agreed it was a racing incident.
“It’s a shame,” Horner added. “He had the pace to score solid points.”
