Red Bull Racing makes a bold move, replacing Lawson with Tsunoda for the Japanese Grand Prix, aiming for better results.
It’s official: Red Bull Racing has made a key decision and promoted Yuki Tsunoda to replace Liam Lawson.
Tsunoda will take the wheel of the Red Bull RB21 starting from the upcoming Japanese Grand Prix, while Lawson will return to Racing Bulls.
In their official statement, Red Bull explained that, following a challenging start to the season for Liam Lawson, it was decided that from the Japanese Grand Prix onward, Yuki Tsunoda would drive for Oracle Red Bull Racing and Lawson would rejoin Visa Cash App Racing Bulls.
“Red Bull has the unique position of holding four F1 seats, split between Oracle Red Bull Racing and Visa Cash App Racing Bulls,” the statement read. “The team has decided to implement a driver rotation, with Yuki joining Max Verstappen, the reigning four-time World Champion.”
Christian Horner, Red Bull Racing’s CEO and Team Principal, commented, “It has been difficult to see Liam struggle with the RB21 during the first two races.”
“As a result, we made the collective decision to make the change earlier than planned.”
“Our approach for the 2025 season has two key goals: to retain the Drivers’ Championship title and to regain the Constructors’ Championship. This is purely a sporting decision.”
“We understand there is still much work to be done with the RB21, and Yuki’s experience will be crucial for the development of the current car. We welcome him to the team and look forward to seeing him behind the wheel of the RB21.”
“We also have a responsibility to support and develop Liam. After such a challenging start, we believe it’s the right move for Liam to gain more experience while continuing his F1 journey with Visa Cash App Racing Bulls, a team and environment he is already very familiar with.”
