Yuki Tsunoda called his clash with Gasly a racing incident, lamenting the lost laps that could’ve boosted his development in Jeddah.
Yuki Tsunoda’s race in Jeddah came to an early end after contact with Pierre Gasly at the start — a moment the Japanese driver simply called a “racing incident.”
The RB driver brushed off the idea of blame, despite his front wing tapping the rear of Gasly’s Alpine. According to Tsunoda, there just wasn’t enough room to avoid the clash.
“It’s tough — for me, that was a racing incident,” he said. “I don’t think there was much more I could’ve done. I tried to avoid the contact, but with the space I had, it was nearly impossible.”
Tsunoda pointed out that in close-quarters racing, things can get messy fast: “We know how it goes. If you try to go around the outside, there’s always risk. And if he doesn’t have at least half the car outside the white line, there’s going to be contact. So yeah — unfortunate.”
More than the contact itself, Tsunoda seemed most frustrated by what it cost him: valuable experience behind the wheel of the RB21.
“I just wanted laps,” he said. “Every single lap matters for me right now. Every one teaches me something. So it’s a real shame we couldn’t get that today.”
