Christian Horner hints Yuki Tsunoda remains a strong contender for a potential Red Bull Racing seat, as uncertainties surround Sergio Perez.
Yuki Tsunoda’s participation in Red Bull’s tire tests in Abu Dhabi this Tuesday is an opportunity for him to prove himself amid uncertainties regarding Sergio Perez’s future, according to team principal Christian Horner.
Perez appears set to leave Red Bull as both parties seek to reach an agreement on his contract situation following a disappointing season in which he finished a distant eighth in the drivers’ championship.
With Red Bull reserve driver and Formula 2 racer Isack Hadjar taking part in the young drivers’ test and Tsunoda focused on the tire tests, Horner says both have a chance to impress, with Tsunoda making his first appearance in a Red Bull car.
“Isack is doing the junior test for us, and Yuki is running the Pirelli tire test. It’s a great opportunity for Yuki to work with the engineering team and get a feel for the RB20.”
“As you know, anytime you sit in a Formula 1 car, it’s a chance to prove yourself. It’s a good opportunity for Yuki, and it’s an excellent opportunity for Isack, so we’ll see.”
Horner states that both Tsunoda and Liam Lawson remain in contention if Red Bull decides to replace Perez next season following yesterday’s meeting.
“Liam, in challenging circumstances, did a very good job. If you analyze what he achieved, the time he had, and the race pace he showed, I think he performed well.”
“Yuki has done a good job too. So, if a decision is made regarding Checo, those would be the candidates.”
