Toyota Gazoo Racing Joins Haas F1 in Technical Alliance

Official : Haas F1 Partners with Toyota Gazoo Racing for F1 Revival

11/10/2024

Haas F1 Team announces a major technical partnership with Toyota Gazoo Racing, marking Toyota’s return to Formula 1 competition.

The rumor had been circulating for several months without confirmation, but it is now official: Haas F1 has signed a “mutually beneficial” technical partnership with Toyota Gazoo Racing, the motorsport division of the Japanese manufacturer.

Gazoo Racing has notably won world titles in WRC and WEC, as well as the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Japanese firm now becomes an “Official Technical Partner” of Haas for several years, as the contract does not have a specific expiration date.

The two companies will share their knowledge and resources. It is specified that Toyota will provide design and manufacturing technical services to Haas, while the American team will offer its technical expertise and commercial benefits to its new ally.

Toyota competed in Formula 1 from 2002 to 2009 before abruptly leaving the top category during the late 2000s crisis. This marks the brand’s return to Formula 1 after a 15-year absence, although not with its own team, and more as a behind-the-scenes presence.

The Toyota Gazoo Racing logos will appear on the Haas VF-24 cars of Nico Hülkenberg and Kevin Magnussen in Austin from October 18 to 20, and will be present next year for Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman. Haas confirms that its other partner, Ferrari, has approved this decision.

“I am very pleased that Haas F1 and Toyota Gazoo Racing have entered into this technical partnership,” said Ayao Komatsu, director of the American team, without specifying the future of the partnership with Dallara, the current manufacturer of Haas’ cars.

“Having a global leader in the automotive industry support our organization and work alongside us, while seeking to enhance and accelerate their own technical and engineering expertise, makes this partnership one with clear benefits for both parties.”

“The ability to leverage the resources and knowledge base of Toyota Gazoo Racing, while benefiting from their technical and manufacturing processes, will be crucial for our own development and our clear ambition to increase our competitiveness in Formula 1. In return, we offer Toyota Gazoo Racing a platform that will allow them to fully utilize and advance their internal engineering capabilities.”

“I am naturally pleased that we have received the support of Formula 1 and our long-term partner, Scuderia Ferrari, with whom we announced our extension earlier this season, in forming this new technical partnership designed to achieve continued success in Formula 1.”

“Together with Gene Haas, we would especially like to thank Stefano Domenicali (CEO of Formula 1) and Fred Vasseur (Team Principal of Ferrari), and at Toyota, I would like to extend my thanks to Akio Toyoda (President of Toyota Motor Corporation), Tomoya Takahashi (President of Gazoo Racing Company), and Masaya Kaji (Project Leader of Gazoo Racing Company).”

“Everyone at MoneyGram Haas F1 Team is looking forward to the outcomes of this new relationship, and we are eager to begin working towards our shared ambitions.”

On Toyota’s side, Gazoo Racing President Tomoya Takahashi acknowledged this return to the top category. The Japanese executive sees it as a technical springboard for both personnel and drivers, with Ritomo Miyata racing in F2 this year under Toyota Gazoo Racing’s banner.

“We are pleased to announce that Haas F1 Team and Toyota Gazoo Racing have reached a basic agreement to begin a technical partnership, including vehicle development,” said Takahashi.

“We would like to express our gratitude to Mr. Gene Haas, Mr. Ayao Komatsu, Mr. Stefano Domenicali (CEO of Formula 1), Mr. Fred Vasseur (Team Principal of Scuderia Ferrari), as well as all our current team partners for their exceptional cooperation and understanding in this collaboration.”

“By competing alongside MoneyGram Haas F1 Team at the pinnacle of motorsport, we aim to develop drivers, engineers, and mechanics while strengthening the capabilities of both MoneyGram Haas F1 Team and TOYOTA GAZOO Racing. We also seek to contribute to motorsport and the automotive industry.”
