Toyota Eyes F1 Return through Haas Partnership

Haas F1 Set to Ink Key Deal with Toyota

Haas F1 is on the verge of sealing a pivotal commercial and technical deal with automotive giant Toyota.

The Japanese automaker Toyota is considering a return to Formula 1 through a partnership with an existing team, Haas F1.

Recent reports indicate that the brand, which ended its F1 project at the end of 2009, could see the small American team as a means to re-enter the paddock.

Nico Hulkenberg will join Sauber, owned by Audi, from next year, but he has praised the progress made by Haas recently—particularly with its upgrade package introduced at Silverstone.

The German believes that Haas is now knocking on the door of the top five F1 teams.

Most sources now agree that Esteban Ocon is expected to replace Hulkenberg next year, with his contract to race alongside Oliver Bearman next year likely to be announced soon.

This progress is attracting Toyota, which has been approached by the Japanese Ayao Komatsu.

One possibility is an initial Sauber-Alfa Romeo type agreement, with a technical deal to use the Cologne wind tunnel (instead of Ferrari’s), which could then be expanded over time. Haas F1 might thus entrust Toyota with the design and study of its chassis, in place of or alongside Dallara.

A return of Toyota as an engine supplier in F1 is firmly ruled out for now.
