FIA Halts Action on Flex Wings Until 2025

FIA sanctions flexible F1 wings for McLaren and Mercedes, delaying stringent measures until 2025.

As we reported, the FIA, Formula 1’s governing body, has approved the controversial front wings of the McLaren and Mercedes F1 teams.

The increasingly less competitive Red Bull team, along with Ferrari, are questioning whether the front wings of their main rivals are too flexible in light of the current regulations.

During recent Grands Prix, the FIA has mounted cameras on the wings to monitor how they bend at high speeds.

Nikolas Tombazis, the FIA’s single-seater director, has confirmed that these tests will continue until Singapore.

“However, even if something is ultimately found,” Tombazis warns, “we will not react before 2025 at the earliest, if it becomes necessary.”

“It would have too much impact not only on aerodynamics but also on the structure of the parts. So even if we were to announce a new rule today, the teams would not be ready before Abu Dhabi.”

According to Tombazis, the 2024-style wings from McLaren and Mercedes are “particularly innovative because they bend twice – the flaps folding back, then the entire wing rotating around the horizontal axis.”
