Todt Reflects: Can Hamilton Replicate Schumacher's Era?

Todt Warns: Hamilton’s Arrival No Quick Fix for Ferrari

Jean Todt cautions that even with Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari faces a challenging path reminiscent of the Schumacher-led revival in the 90s.

Jean Todt is uncertain that the arrival of Lewis Hamilton alone will catapult Ferrari to a World Championship title. When at the helm of Scuderia, the Frenchman had signed Michael Schumacher, then a double world champion, in 1996 (see photo below). He recalls that it then took several years to secure the title.

“The arrival of Hamilton will give fans a Ferrari at 9/10,” stated the Frenchman to Bild newspaper. “My Ferrari back in the distant year of 1993 was a 5/10. Everyone is now questioning whether Hamilton’s arrival will be enough to aim for the world title.”

“To win the championship, one must be perfect. In recent times, Ferrari has occasionally found itself contending for the world championship, but has never succeeded in the endeavor. It lacked the final step, the decisive step.”

According to him, the signing of Hamilton alone will not suffice to provide what the team is missing: “Currently, other teams have more opportunities, like Red Bull. Ferrari will need to strive to follow their example.”

“There will always be two excellent drivers at Maranello. After all, everyone dreams of driving a red single-seater. Yet, even Michael, when he joined Ferrari, had to wait four years before he clinched his first title with us. It requires patience and work.”
