The FIA has confirmed key changes to F1’s rules, including scrapping the fastest lap point starting in 2025.
The FIA has published the changes approved by the World Council for the 2025 and 2026 F1 seasons. While the Sporting Regulations will see minor adjustments, one significant decision stands out for the upcoming season.
The federation has decided to scrap the point awarded for the fastest lap, a rule in place since 2019. Previously, the driver who set the fastest lap, provided they finished in the top 10, earned an additional point.
This rule will be abolished from 2025, likely in response to Daniel Ricciardo’s fastest lap for RB F1 in Singapore, which played a crucial role in helping Red Bull against McLaren, particularly aiding Max Verstappen in his battle with Lando Norris.
The FIA has also announced a doubling of testing sessions for young drivers. This means that each full-time driver will be required to relinquish their seat twice per season to allow a rookie to participate, offering a total of four sessions for young drivers as a minimum.
Sporting and financial changes for 2026
The FIA has confirmed that its regulations will undergo further changes in 2026, introducing a new structure to improve clarity and consistency through thematic organisation.
While the Technical Regulations for 2026 have been detailed, they have not yet been made public. It is known, however, that the cars will deliver better aerodynamic performance than initially anticipated, without increasing drag, thereby maintaining the integrity of on-track battles.
The Sporting Regulations will also evolve, introducing a “straight-line mode” and a “cornering mode” from 2026. This change is driven by the integration of active aerodynamics, which will necessitate specific provisions depending on the mode in use.
Finally, the Financial Regulations will also be revised in 2026. The FIA, in collaboration with the teams and Formula 1, has conducted an initial review of the cost cap introduced in 2021. Exclusions will be adjusted, as will monitoring methodologies.
The FIA confirmed that the budget cap will be amended to incorporate these changes, with an increase to account for inflation.
