Team Orders Reciprocal Piastri Affirms

Piastri Would Yield Win Like Norris, Says

26/07/2024

Oscar Piastri supports team strategy, claiming he’d sacrifice a win for team success, echoing Norris’s actions.

Oscar Piastri stated he would have accepted McLaren F1 team orders during the Hungarian Grand Prix as Lando Norris did.

Piastri, who clinched his first Formula 1 victory last weekend after his teammate Norris moved aside for him, said he would have done the same if the roles were reversed.

“First and foremost, I am a McLaren Racing race driver, not Oscar Piastri Racing… The bigger picture must always be considered.”

Piastri made it clear he would have “given back the position under the same circumstances. It would have been reciprocal had it been the other way around.”

“Team orders work both ways. We are both very open and very honest about it.”

“The first priority of the weekend was to secure a one-two finish for the team… It doesn’t happen without some tough decisions, but pulling Lando over was the right choice to protect him from others. But I was ahead of him from the start, had I been pulled over earlier or at the same time, I would have stayed ahead.”

“Of course there are emotions behind the orders. But we both know that in the end, we race for the team.”

“I think that with the last pit stop, if we had really raced each other, the strategies would have been very different.”
