Szafnauer: Pérez still has what it takes for F1

Former F1 boss backs Sergio Pérez for comeback, citing experience, tyre skills, and resilience despite recent Red Bull performance issues.

Sergio Pérez’s potential return to F1 remains uncertain despite apparent mutual interest between him and Cadillac.

Otmar Szafnauer, who managed him at Force India and Racing Point, is convinced that despite a difficult stint at Red Bull, Pérez still has what it takes to come back.

“Should Checo come back? He’s good enough, yes,” Szafnauer said.

“When he was driving for me, he had the fighting spirit, the qualities, and the skills. I think he also had those at the start with Red Bull. Toward the end, he may have lost a bit of focus, but let’s not forget he was up against Max Verstappen.”

According to the former Alpine boss, the Mexican has a long list of qualities that could help him relaunch his career: “He’s a great driver, he rarely makes mistakes, and he’s very good at tyre management.”

“Those are his strengths. His weaknesses? I wasn’t at Red Bull, but when he was with us, he was really, really good. I think for a guy like Checo, with all that experience behind him, it’s not that difficult to come back, not that difficult at all.”
