Alonso is frustrated by his poor start to the 2025 season and hopes for better luck at the Japanese Grand Prix.
Fernando Alonso is hoping for a change in luck this weekend in Japan after a disappointing start to the 2025 season. The Aston Martin F1 driver has yet to score any points following two retirements earlier in the season, and he’s feeling the frustration of his bad luck as he takes stock of the current campaign.
“It hasn’t gone well for me, I haven’t scored any points, and I don’t think I’m even ranked in the championship because I haven’t seen the checkered flag!” admits the two-time world champion. “I hope I’ll have a bit more luck in the next race.”
Alonso Sees Tight Competition, Trusts Aston Martin’s Future
When it comes to competitiveness, Alonso acknowledges how tight things are in the grid: “It’s extremely close, with just a handful of tenths separating positions. You can go from last place to qualifying in Q3. This shows that we need to perform perfectly every weekend, and that’s the goal—it’s a great challenge.”
Although Alonso hasn’t yet met Adrian Newey, he places his full trust in the renowned engineer. “Not yet, I haven’t visited the factory this week, but I know he’s highly motivated. He works on the smallest details every day, looking for things that can be improved. This is just the beginning for him.”
Having driven for Ferrari and briefly flirted with Red Bull, two teams that are also having a tough start to the season, Alonso believes that Aston Martin presents an attractive long-term option for a driver looking for a solid project.
“When you make decisions, it’s hard to predict what will happen. It’s a feeling, a trust you place in a team. Aston Martin, with all the investments and the people coming in, is a great place for the future. But I’m not 20 anymore. I’ll keep racing as long as I can, but if I were a young driver, Aston Martin would be my choice.”
Stroll Aims to Maintain Momentum
Meanwhile, Lance Stroll, known for his quiet demeanor in interviews, is satisfied with his start to the season, having scored points in both Melbourne and China, and is eager to continue his momentum.
“It’s been a good start to the season. I’m happy with the results in Melbourne and China, and I’m going to keep giving it my all,” said Stroll, who reveals he hasn’t spoken with Adrian Newey yet. “No, I haven’t been to the factory.”
