Post-Monza, McLaren’s Stella criticizes the contentious Piastri overtake on Norris.
Andrea Stella, Team Principal at McLaren F1, expressed his dissatisfaction following the Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
His drivers were outmanoeuvred by Ferrari’s strategy, a significant setback, but they also found themselves in a tough battle at the second chicane on the first lap. This skirmish allowed Charles Leclerc to overtake Norris’ papaya-coloured car, while Piastri took the lead.
“In terms of expectations and the drivers’ feedback, as well as the overtaking manoeuvre itself, we will need to review this calmly, take stock with them, and then assess the situation. If there are lessons to be learnt, we will incorporate them into future strategies. However, it was clearly not satisfying. No contact, yes, but no favours to others!”
Discussing how McLaren lost the race, Stella added, “It’s disappointing because we had the performance to win the race.”
“The race was tightly contested between one and two-stop strategies. Most opted for two stops. I think for Leclerc, it was somewhat easier to take the risk of one stopping since he was the following car.”
“For us, with Lando, we experienced a front left lockup, which meant the tyre gave out, so we clearly went for a two-stop strategy. With Oscar, it was more marginal, but he had concerns and we had reservations, so we opted for a double stop.”
“We thought we had the time to regain the lead, but Ferrari did a splendid job. Leclerc drove superbly, so we must also acknowledge that competitors can perform well and, in this case, manage the race with a single stop.”
“Kudos to Ferrari, but still, a good weekend for McLaren, overall a very positive one.”
