Steiner claims FIA’s lapses would’ve spared Hamilton, securing his 8th F1 title under Whiting’s watch.
Former Haas F1 team principal, Gunther Steiner, states that the late Formula 1 race director Charlie Whiting, who died in 2019, would have prevented the controversial end to the 2021 World Championship and a subsequent drift by the FIA.
Steiner, who was penalized for criticizing FIA stewards multiple times during his tenure at the helm of the American team, claims that after Whiting’s death on the eve of the 2019 season, “the FIA stopped being accountable for its mistakes and lost its humility.”
“And that’s not a good situation,” Steiner added in his new book, “Unfiltered.”
He referenced the contentious 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where race director Michael Masi broke F1 rules by arranging a late restart following the safety car, during which Lewis Hamilton lost the World Championship to Max Verstappen.
“Whatever your view on that situation – and yes, I agree, it was incredible entertainment – from a regulatory standpoint, it was a shitshow of biblical proportions, and whatever decision Charlie Whiting might have made instead of Michael Masi, there would have been far less controversy and embarrassment.”
“We all know what Charlie would have done. If he had been in charge, Lewis would now be an eight-time world champion.”
