Court Sides with Steiner, Artistic Integrity Wins

27/09/2024

Steiner secures a legal win against Haas F1, affirming his book’s adherence to artistic standards.

Gunther Steiner won an initial round in his battle against his former F1 employer, Haas.

After being dismissed as the long-standing team principal before the 2024 season, Steiner sued the small American team owned by Gene Haas, alleging various breaches of his contractual agreement. This lawsuit is still ongoing.

However, Haas had retaliated by filing a complaint in California claiming that Steiner had unlawfully used the Haas brand and images in his book Surviving To Drive.

The Central District Court of California has now dismissed this complaint.

In his ruling, Judge André Birotte explained that Steiner had no choice but to include the Haas-owned trademarks in his book about his Formula 1 experiences, as is the case for “many sports biographies.”

“The use of the Haas trademarks is artistically relevant to the book,” he added.

Steiner, 59, is still involved in Formula 1, but only as a television commentator.

After the Singapore GP on Sunday, he stated he was “betting on Lando (Norris) to beat Max Verstappen for the 2024 World Champion title.”

“In Singapore, he was so good, except for a few times where he lost his concentration or something like that. It was strange—look at (Kevin) Magnussen, he hit the wall once and got a puncture.”
