Stake F1 Keeps Magnussen Door Ajar, But Doubts Linger

Magnussen Hints at F1 Lifeline, But Confidence Remains Low

24/10/2024

Kevin Magnussen suggests a slim chance of staying in F1, but remains sceptical as Stake delays its 2025 driver decision.

Magnussen believes “the door is open” for an unlikely lifeline in F1, as Stake continues to delay its 2025 driver announcement.

Mattia Binotto is currently weighing up who will partner Nico Hulkenberg on the grid next season, with the team set to race under the Stake banner before transitioning to Audi F1 in 2026.

Alongside current driver Valtteri Bottas, candidates include Mick Schumacher, Williams driver Franco Colapinto, and F2 title contender Gabriel Bortoleto.

Outside the Red Bull seat ecosystem, the Stake seat remains the only one available for 2025.

Magnussen is expected to leave F1 at the end of the season after Haas opted to sign Ollie Bearman and Esteban Ocon to replace the Dane and Hulkenberg. However, he has admitted that there remains a slim chance of an unexpected lifeline with the Hinwil-based team.

“On paper, the door is open,” Magnussen said in Mexico today.

“So, you never know in this sport. I’ve learned that you can never be certain about what’s going to happen.”

Though Magnussen admits he’s not holding out much hope, he was also questioned about a potential move to IndyCar, after racing for McLaren at Road America in 2021 as a stand-in for the injured Felix Rosenqvist.

“I really don’t have anything lined up for next year. We’ve talked about doing something together here at Haas, but obviously, it won’t be racing. So, who knows what the future holds?”
