Spa Weather Forces Ferrari to Rethink Tactics

Ferrari seeks ‘the right compromise’ in response to Spa’s weather conditions

26/07/2024

Ferrari adapts its strategy in response to the challenging weather at Spa, refining its approach this Friday.

Ferrari appeared poised to secure the third spot during the practice sessions of the Belgian Grand Prix this Friday. However, Charles Leclerc remains cautious, believing the current standings do not accurately reflect what the qualifiers will hold.

“It was very challenging to make sense of the day. There were significant variations in pace under different conditions and with varying tyres. Everyone was on a different agenda,” Leclerc noted. “For several years now, Fridays have been difficult to interpret with this generation of cars, but today it was even more so.”

“We need to focus on ourselves and find the right balance between tomorrow, which will be wet, and Sunday, which will be dry. But we are on top of it; we have meetings scheduled that will help us find our way.”

He mentioned that Ferrari is trailing behind McLaren: “Compared to McLaren, it’s a mixed bag. We won’t have a magical solution for tomorrow. But we will give it our all since it’s the last race before the break, and we want to end on a high note.”

Carlos Sainz was taken aback by the resurfaced track, which is significantly faster and features different bumps than seen in the past. The Spaniard elaborated on this Friday’s agenda.

“This year, we encountered a track vastly different from previous years due to the new asphalt,” explained the Spaniard. “We had to adjust the car to these new conditions and bumps, but overall, the new surface offers much more grip.”

“We must remain vigilant about tyre degradation, and race simulation was a crucial part of our Friday program. Tomorrow, we’ll aim to maximize the package we have and qualify as high as possible.”
