Mercedes boosts Antonelli’s F1 prep with a Spa test next week, driving the 2022 W13.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli will participate in another F1 test for Mercedes after the Belgian Grand Prix.
The 17-year-old Italian, a Mercedes junior, will drive at the legendary Spa-Francorchamps circuit next week when he takes the wheel of the team’s 2022 W13.
His driving of this F1 is part of his TPC program (former F1 cars aged two years or more). Antonelli has also taken part in tests at the Red Bull Ring, Silverstone, and Imola in recent months to speed up his training for a very likely F1 seat in 2025.
“It’s challenging to find opportunities to conduct a TPC program because the F1 racing calendar is very busy. We don’t have a whole separate team of people capable of doing it,” said Andrew Shovlin, Mercedes F1’s chief track engineer today in Belgium.
“This is one of the realities of cost capping: you no longer have the test team you had in the past, and Kimi is very busy with his F2 schedule, which, when you are in Europe, is quite significant.”
“We have other events planned. We are doing a day with him here at Spa after the weekend. And then we have more events later in the year, but everything is going well, and the programs will now focus on teaching him how to refine the approach to qualifying, how to refine the approach to long stints, and try to do all this work so he can get a clearer idea of what he needs to work on and improve.”
“But everything is going well. And many other tests are planned.”
