Haas F1 endures a tough weekend at Spa, yet team director Komatsu remains optimistic about future races.
Haas F1 experienced its worst weekend of the season in terms of performance, with both drivers eliminated in Q1 and disappointing race results. Ayao Komatsu, the team director, shares what happened with his drivers, Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hülkenberg.
“It was a tough race, we simply lacked pace,” Komatsu laments. “For Kevin, he had a very good race and we managed to execute a one-stop strategy. That was a good call, as Russell also made a one-stop and managed to win the race before his disqualification, unlike his teammate who made two stops.”
“The track evolution was quite significant, and tire degradation was less than expected. We reacted well by switching Kevin’s strategy from two stops to one, and he drove well,” he continued, before turning to Hülkenberg’s race.
“Nico struggled a lot more, and we couldn’t have implemented a one-stop strategy with him due to his tire wear. We need to investigate the reasons, but overall, this is not how we wanted to finish the last race before the summer break.”
Nevertheless, Haas has had a positive first half of the season: “But we have to look at the bigger picture. Over 14 races, we have scored 27 points and are seventh in the Constructors’ Championship – so we need to focus on the positives.”
