Williams F1 Targets Spa Success, Eyes Points Haul

24/07/2024

Williams F1 targets a strong finish at Spa, optimistically seeking points as the FW46 finds a suitable track.

Williams F1 endured a challenging weekend at the twisting Hungaroring circuit amid the scorching Mogyorod heat. This weekend at Spa-Francorchamps, likely under rainy conditions, the team hopes for improvement, as Alex Albon explains.

“As we approach the last race before the summer break, the season has been tough so far, but we have learned a lot, gaining a better understanding of the car’s characteristics, which we aim to apply for the remainder of the season and beyond,” said the Thai driver.

“For Spa, I look forward to racing on a circuit I enjoy and that should better suit our car. The forest climate always makes things interesting, and it should be a bit cooler, which always helps us in tire management, an area where we struggled last year. I hope we can head into the summer break on a high note and make the most of any opportunities that arise.”

Logan Sargeant is also eager to return to the beloved Belgian track: “I’m excited to head to Spa before the summer break. We need to continue our momentum to finish on a positive note.”

“The weather is always a factor at this time of year at Spa, which can present opportunities. Historically, this track has suited our car better than others, so it will be interesting to see how the FW46’s characteristics perform in this context where the midfield battle is very tight.”

Sven Smeets, Williams’ sporting director, discusses the challenges Belgium brings, particularly in terms of weather: “We look forward to returning to Belgium, as it’s one of the best circuits on the calendar.”

“Spa has everything: long straights, high-speed corner sequences, and slow-speed chicanes. The weather forecast predicts mixed conditions until Saturday, which will make qualifying even more interesting, while Sunday’s weather should improve for a dry race.”

“This is the last race before the summer break, and we hope to end the first half of the year on a good note with some points, as this circuit should suit our car.”
