South Africa advances plans for a Formula 1 Grand Prix, narrowing down cities to submit its bid for the prestigious event.

The South African government has taken a significant step forward in its Formula 1 Grand Prix project with the official confirmation of its plans. On Friday, the Ministry of Sports, Arts, and Culture proposed several potential locations through its Formula 1 Bid Steering Committee.

South Africa aims to host a Grand Prix by 2026 or 2027 and hopes to secure a long-term contract: “A promoter and/or a suitable venue and host city will be selected to submit a bid to the FIA and Formula 1,” the statement reads.

With its existing circuit and the potential to achieve Grade 1 status in the near future, Kyalami is the clear favorite. However, Cape Town may also position itself as a possible destination for the Grand Prix, especially since the ministry’s document specifies that the track must be within 30 minutes of a major city.

“The environment must enhance the appeal and atmosphere of a premier international event and/or provide an iconic backdrop,” the guidelines continue. “The layout must deliver thrilling racing and allow for wheel-to-wheel battles with plenty of overtaking opportunities.”

Gayton McKenzie, the country’s Minister of Sports, explained why Kyalami is the favored project: “The race will take place at Kyalami. Kyalami is doing what is required. Toby Venter and Willie Venter, the circuit’s leaders, are doing excellent work to bring Kyalami up to F1 standards.”

“They have invested money, it’s there. They met with Apex, which is handling the track upgrades to meet F1 requirements. We are ensuring that we will host the championship, and I believe we are targeting 2027. We were there; it’s going to happen. It’s going to happen here.”

The committee has given cities until January 31 to express their interest. It stated that a decision would be made within five days, meaning the chosen city to bid for F1 will be announced before February 5.
