Piastri Falls Short: Home Pole Slips Away After Q3 Error

15/03/2025

Oscar Piastri came agonizingly close to pole in Melbourne, but a Q3 mistake saw him settle for second behind McLaren teammate Lando Norris.

Oscar Piastri came tantalizingly close to securing pole position for his home Grand Prix in Australia but had to settle for second place, just 0.084 seconds behind his McLaren teammate, Lando Norris.

Missing out on pole in front of his home crowd was understandably a slight disappointment, especially after a mistake on his first flying lap in Q3.

“Pretty happy,” Piastri said when asked about his thoughts on the session.

“It’s obviously great to start the year on the front row. One spot lower than I would’ve liked, but still an amazing way to kick things off. And having a McLaren lockout at the front? That’s pretty special.”

“Now, it’s all reset, and we’ll see what tomorrow brings.”

Reflecting on his Q3 performance, Piastri admitted he left some time on the table.

“In the final sector, I lost a bit compared to my previous best. I also locked up on my first run in Q3, so I didn’t want to repeat that, and maybe I played it a little too safe.”

While the pole slipped through his fingers, Piastri remains optimistic. With a strong starting position and a long season ahead, the young Aussie is ready to fight for victory on home soil.
