Pirelli predicted the race strategies, yet the unexpected success of soft tires in Singapore took them by surprise.
Pirelli had once again accurately predicted race strategies, with widespread use of medium and hard tires in Singapore. However, the manufacturer admits its surprise regarding the use of soft tires.
“Overall, it was a relatively straightforward race without a single neutralization, a first in the history of this race. The one-stop strategy proved to be the fastest and all three compounds performed as expected,” explains Mario Isola, head of the F1 program.
“The Medium and Hard were clearly the most used, but the Soft also proved itself, as evidenced by the times achieved by Hamilton with a full fuel load during his initial 17-lap stint, or by Tsunoda over 28 laps in the latter part of the race, with perfectly acceptable degradation.”
Isola also commends the management of those who kept reserves to switch to softs: “When assessing tire performance, an important factor to consider is the level of pace management adopted by the drivers, as well as the traffic encountered at different times during the race.”
“This was particularly relevant with the Medium, as depending on their pace, some drivers were able to extend their first stint well beyond the window predicted by strategy simulations, which opened up the possibility of using the Soft, as was the case with Tsunoda and Gasly.”
“After four races in five weeks, Formula 1 is taking a short break before the trio of races in the Americas. But for our group, the track work continues, with four days of testing made possible only through the vital support of the teams, namely Mercedes, Red Bull, Ferrari, and McLaren.”
