Max Verstappen responds with irony to McLaren’s critique, questioning “Who’s Zak Brown?” as tensions flare between him and McLaren at the heated Silverstone showdown.
Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren F1, expressed frustration that Max Verstappen does not adhere to on-track battle rules, while Andrea Stella, director of the British team, has called on the FIA to clarify the boundaries to the Red Bull driver.
According to Brown, the three-time world champion “will continue” to behave in this manner unless he is explicitly reminded.
Some have praised this statement amid the escalating tension between Red Bull and McLaren, like former driver Christijan Albers: “I found this criticism brilliant. Zak Brown’s political play is magnificent. A stab here, a pull there, taking a dig at Horner… Finally, the fire is back!”
When asked about Brown’s attack, Max Verstappen sarcastically responded: “Who is Zak Brown? I have nothing to do with this.” The Dutch driver then explained that he was not in the same mindset as during the 2021 clashes where he had subjected Lewis Hamilton to similar treatment.
“Back then, I also didn’t have as many wins and titles. You’re a bit more relaxed at that time. I understand all this, which is why I thought it was necessary to calm down,” he continued, explaining that he chose to discuss matters privately with Norris.
“I understand that you are emotional and disappointed. I was also disappointed by what happened in Austria. But there’s no need to shout everything immediately in front of the camera. The important thing is that you understand each other.”
He confirmed that the incident was not discussed at the drivers’ briefing in Silverstone: “No. In fact, we simply talked about current issues, things that we might be able to improve in the future regarding circuits, track limits, that sort of thing. We didn’t talk about the incident anymore.”
