Shovlin Hails Hamilton's Relentless Pursuit of Perfection

Hamilton’s Unique Drive: Fear of Losing Fuels Success

02/01/2025

Lewis Hamilton’s fear of losing sets him apart, driving unmatched determination and energy, says ex-Mercedes engineer Andrew Shovlin.

Andrew Shovlin will hold fond memories of Lewis Hamilton after the Briton’s 12 seasons with Mercedes F1. The Track Engineering Director praises the motivation the driver brought to the team, which he now leaves to join Ferrari.

“There are no other drivers like him, so you could say he’s unique in that regard,” Shovlin acknowledges. “It’s a pleasure to work with him. He’s driven to succeed, as we all are, and in a team, that’s what you want from everyone.”

“But Lewis has his own fear of failure that drives his work ethic. And that’s a good thing because when you have a driver who brings that to the team, he constantly pushes, constantly wants to improve. It injects a lot of energy into the team.”

While Shovlin has seen many drivers determined to win at all costs, he has never encountered the level of resolve that defeat triggers in Hamilton: “He’s the only driver I’ve worked with where it manifests to such a degree.”

“No good driver likes losing; they all hate it. That’s completely normal. It’s the work and worry it triggers in Lewis that, I think, sets him apart from most others.”
