Gasly disqualified, strategy misfires, pace lacking — Alpine faces tough questions after a second straight race weekend with no points.
Alpine F1 Team Principal Oliver Oakes is looking for answers after another frustrating race weekend — the team’s second Grand Prix in a row without scoring a single point.
Pierre Gasly crossed the line in 11th place in Shanghai, just like he did in Melbourne. With both Ferraris disqualified post-race, it could’ve been a 9th-place finish for Alpine — but Gasly was also disqualified for running an underweight car. To make matters worse, his A525 was struggling by the end, worn tires and an unplanned one-stop strategy working against him.
“The race pace was better than qualifying, and both Pierre and Jack Doohan managed to gain positions,” Oakes explained.
“After what we saw during the Sprint — with high tire degradation and graining — we debated between one or two stops. As the track evolved, we committed to a one-stop strategy on hard tires until the end.”
“Pierre had another strong launch, gaining three spots on the opening lap just like in the Sprint. He was running 11th at the flag, but unfortunately, a technical non-compliance led to his disqualification.”
“Jack’s pace was right in the mix with his midfield rivals, and he fought hard throughout the race.”
“In the end, we were just missing something in China. We need to dig into the data to understand why we weren’t as competitive on this circuit and figure out how we can improve heading into the next rounds.”
