Lance Stroll : The Full Story of His 2024 F1 Season

27/12/2024

Lance Stroll’s 2024 F1 season raised questions: inconsistent performances, diminishing results, and a lackluster attitude both on and off track.

Writing Lance Stroll’s 2024 season review is no easy feat, as the Canadian’s eighth F1 campaign proved to be, like so many others before it, at best forgettable and at worst embarrassing.

The impression left is all the more negative as Stroll scored a paltry total of zero points during the second half of the season. All his points came before the summer break, precisely when Aston Martin F1 still had the fifth-best car on the grid, before its dramatic decline.

The opening races were relatively solid, highlighted by his best result of the year: a 6th-place finish in Melbourne. But by the second Grand Prix, Stroll had already made headlines with a clumsy crash in Saudi Arabia—another sign of the inconsistency that continues to frustrate. Another particularly awkward moment came in China, where he collided with Daniel Ricciardo under a safety car, an incident he bizarrely refused to take responsibility for.

As always, Lance Stroll showed glimpses of brilliance in changeable conditions, but these flashes were rare. The 26-year-old believes his strongest performances came at Silverstone and in Canada, where he excelled in mixed weather. At the British Grand Prix, he even outpaced teammate Fernando Alonso to secure a well-earned 7th place.

In qualifying, Stroll’s early-season performance was respectable, far from disgraceful. Perhaps benefiting from Alonso’s advancing age, he held his own against his illustrious teammate. Before Spa, Stroll trailed Alonso 5-9 in qualifying head-to-heads, including a strong streak of three consecutive sessions where he outqualified the Spaniard. At the season’s halfway mark, Stroll was 10th in the Drivers’ Championship, trailing Alonso by 25 points.

The second half of the season, however, was a complete collapse for Stroll, mirroring Aston Martin’s struggles in development. He endured a streak of twelve consecutive qualifying defeats, from Hungary to Abu Dhabi. While Alonso managed to scrape together 21 points post-summer break, Stroll failed to score a single point in that period. His best post-summer result? A modest 11th place in Mexico.

The Brazilian Grand Prix encapsulated Stroll’s decline. During the formation lap, he lost control under braking at Turn 4, lightly hitting the wall with his front wing. While this initial incident could be forgiven, his decision to plow through a soaked gravel trap afterward left Aston Martin’s mechanics—who had just rebuilt his car—either laughing or despairing.

This moment, both comical and frustrating, captured the Canadian’s mindset at the end of the season, as he seemed increasingly disheartened. Stroll’s demeanor raised eyebrows; he appeared more detached than ever, offering only brief, formulaic responses to journalists after sessions, with little enthusiasm. Disrespect? Waning interest in F1? Either way, Stroll’s performances on track were no better than his attitude off it.

Despite his 166 Grand Prix starts, the Canadian remains an enigma. While he occasionally flashes talent (even less frequently this year), he is too often invisible on race weekends. With his seat secured thanks to father Lawrence Stroll, it’s hard to imagine Lance suddenly transforming next year. It will mark his ninth F1 season. Does he truly deserve it?
