Argentina Pushes for F1 Return with Buenos Aires Bid

Argentina Pushes for F1 Return with Buenos Aires Bid

16/10/2024

An Argentine minister will meet Formula 1 officials in Brazil to discuss reviving the sport in Buenos Aires.

Argentina’s bid to return to the F1 calendar is gaining momentum. Two weeks ago, buoyed by the country’s improving economic situation and Franco Colapinto’s rapid rise, Sports Minister Daniel Scioli declared that “Argentina is ready for Formula 1’s return.”

This is not mere rhetoric, as Scioli told Buenos Aires’ LR6 Radio Mitre that he has scheduled a meeting with Liberty Media, the owner of F1, and the FIA during the Brazilian GP in São Paulo, early next month.

“We have a meeting in Brazil about Formula 1,” he said. “On November 1st, I will be in São Paulo with the president of Liberty, who oversees organizing these events, and with the president of the FIA.”

“Argentina is ready to host F1, with private investments. We will explain to them why they should come to our country. We are moving forward with this project because we have the conditions to host an event of such global impact and job creation.”

He acknowledges that the impressive mid-season debut of Argentine rookie Colapinto for Williams supports the project, though it does not depend on it: “But for us, Formula 1 goes beyond Colapinto. The Buenos Aires circuit is being modernized.”

“We are already progressing with the necessary works to meet the requirements. Private companies are willing to cover all expenses to bring this event to our country. Additionally, the city government is investing heavily.”
