Sainz Steps Up: Why He Took the GPDA Leadership Role

02/03/2025

Carlos Sainz reveals why he embraced the GPDA director role, citing experience, timing, and a shared vision with fellow drivers.

Carlos Sainz has explained why he decided to take on the role of GPDA (Grand Prix Drivers’ Association) director. The Spaniard became a director this winter and detailed the reasons that made him feel it was the right time.

“More or less over the winter, I had some time to think. I was at home, and the idea came to me that maybe this was my moment,” said the new Williams Racing recruit.

“Now that I’m 30, I have 10 years of experience in F1, and I’m starting to understand how this sport works—the combination of the drivers, FOM, and this connection with the FIA. With my experience, I thought I could potentially put myself forward as a candidate.”

Once he felt ready, he went to discuss it with Alex Wurz, the GPDA president: “I met Alex in Monaco in January. He was obviously in agreement and supported the idea.”

“So far, we only had one driver director, George [Russell]. I felt I was ready for it and to take on the role, and my peers here seemed to agree and support it. That made things even easier.”

He will now start thinking about the key issues he needs to address and the pressing topics that he and his peers must prioritize.

“Maybe we’ll need another interview for that. I will simply go through the three or four points we might need to work on, which will take up some of our time. Some of them are private matters that we are trying to resolve behind closed doors.”

However, some issues are public, such as the letter the GPDA sent to the FIA expressing drivers’ dissatisfaction with fines related to language use.

“Others are more public, like the letter we posted and the support we recently received from rally drivers. It seems we are all on the same page in that regard. But again, I think a different, longer discussion is needed for that.”
